A 36-year-old British woman has died after trying to rescue her two sons, who were swept away while snorkelling in the Bahamas.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said officers on the island of Bimini had launched an investigation into the sudden death, which took place on Tuesday.
Police said the woman, believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was snorkelling with her husband and two sons near the southern point of the island. A strong current reportedly swept both children away.
“In an attempt to rescue her sons, the woman was also swept away,” police said. The children were later rescued from the water.
Medical Response
In a statement posted on social media, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said that, according to a preliminary report, officers at the Alice Town police station received information shortly after 10am that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock.
Officers attended and learned that the woman had been taken to the local clinic for medical attention. A local doctor later pronounced her dead despite efforts to save her life.
Police said the woman was rescued and taken to the ferry dock, where CPR was reportedly administered.
“Foul play is not suspected at this time,” the force said. “An autopsy will be conducted to assist in determining the exact cause of death.”
Foreign Office Response
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas.”
The spokesperson added: “We are in contact with the local authorities and providing support to her family.”
