A solicitor has been secretly filmed by the BBC explaining how a £45,000 fine for illegal working could be avoided.
Mohammad Alias Yousaf, also known as Alias, made the claim to an undercover reporter. The reporter was posing as a mini-mart owner facing a fine for employing an illegal worker.
The Bradford-based solicitor told the potential client he could get him out of the fine. To do so, he said, the client would need to find someone overseas who was prepared to declare themselves the owner of the mini-mart.
Denial
Alias has denied ever providing such advice. He has also denied giving false information to the Home Office.
Government response
Following the BBC investigation, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced a review of the way illegal working fines are issued and collected.
